Kit Calvert Of Wensleydale

KIT CALVERT, founder of the present-day Wensleydale cheese industry, has often been described as "the complete dalesman". He smokes a clay pipe and there is a farmer's look about his clothes. His hair is grey and wiry and habitually windswept, and his eyes are full of life, humour and directness. He has lived in Hawes all his life and is a great publicist of Wensleydale and its dialect, customs and history. In this book Kit tells his life story. Born in 1903, the son of a quarryman at Burtersett, he was hired as a farm labourer for five shillings a week at the age of twelve and eventually acquired his own farm. When the local dairy became insolvent, he was instrumental in forming a company to take it over - the first rung on a ladder which was to see him owning seven dairies in Wensleydale and beyond, before ultimately selling out to the Milk Marketing Board for PS487,000 in 1966. Much of this book is about the trials and tribulations of transforming the manufacture of Wensleydale cheese into a modern industry. But Kit also tells of his years of poverty in the depression, his battle with planning authorities to build a children's playground, his love of dialect and his unique secondhand bookshop at Hawes. It is all recounted in his inimitable style, with affection, humour and some delightful dialogue. Dust shelf Sold as seen
