Signature Knob Creek Bourbon in smaller casks mean bigger Bourbon flavor. Knob Creek is one of the special "small batch" brands of Beam-Suntory. Along with it's sister labels -- Booker's, Baker's, and Basil Hayden's -- it's tailored to the more discriminating Bourbon-lover (and that means YOU). The Knob Creek brand was first launched in 1992, and since then they have changed it very little -- remaining dedicated to reproducing a pre-Prohibition style Bourbon experience with a higher ABV that makes it a Bourbon-of-Choice for discriminating cocktail aficionados everywhere while winning awards and turning heads. To tell you all about Knob Creek Quarter Oak we have to tell you about Whiskey barrels. Barrels are hard to get and expensive -- every Spirits-producer on the planet wants them. Big barrels hold more using less wood per volume so they are on-average cheaper to use. Small casks give better Spirit to wood contact so the aging process is faster and more flavor gets into the Spirit. Knob Creek Quarter Oak is that wonderful Knob Creek signature Bourbon that we LOVE, but some of it has been rested in small, quarter-sized casks. This means that the vanilla and caramel flavors shine out even more. Smartass corner: The math of barrel sizing takes us back to high-school geometry. Barrels are roughly cylinder-shaped. Since the volume of a cylinder = pi times the radius squared times height, a small increase in radius means a big increase in volume. In other words, a little more wood holds a lot more Whiskey.
