Knossos - The Sanctuary Of Demeter (supplementary Volume No. 8) (rare, 1st Edition With Dust Jacket)

Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Between 1957 and 1960, the British School of Archaeology at Athens was busily excavating the Palace of Minos at Knossos - a sanctuary where the goddess Demeter had been worshipped by the ancient Knossians from the 8th century BCE to the 2nd century CE. This book is a detailed report of the team's findings, each chapter authored by an appropriate expert, with catalogue of the objects found, and photographs of many of these. It offers a fascinating resource for any reader with an interest in ancient civilisations, or archaeology. John Nicolas Coldstream, FBA, FSA, (1927-2008) was an archaeologist and academic specialising in the Ancient Greek pottery of the Geometric Period. He lectured first at Bedford College, rising to become Professor of Aegean Archaeology, and then at University College, London as Yates Professor of Classical Art and Archaeology. His best known excavation sites are Kythera and Knossos. Our book is in very nice condition, its unclipped dust jacket having borne the brunt of any wear or use, being slightly soft at the edges and top & tail of the spine, and a little grubby generally. THe book itself, bound in light green cloth with gilt title etc on the spine, is in almost 'as new' condition externally, and pristine inside, with firm binding, clean bright pages, and folded site map present and undamaged. Previous owner's name inscribed at the top of the front fep, dated 1979.
