Pale blue cloth binding, title in red on spine. Publisher's logo blind-stamped on front. Corners slightly bumped, edges slightly rubbed. No DJ. Block tinted red on top edge. Slight foxing on sides of block but contents clean. Binding tight. First published in 1942, in Nazi-occupied France, then in paperback in the USA in 1946. The first English translation appeared as The Stranger in the USA and The Outsider in the UK, both in 1946. This work was the first by Camus to gain widespread attention and critical acclaim, in spite of the difficult circumstances of its publication. Its importance lies in its treatment of character, its setting, and the philosophical issues it raises. The protagonist Merseault, who acts without motivation and apparently without emotion, even when killing a man, was seen as a model for the Existentialist philosophy outlined by Jean-Paul Sartre. The setting in Algiers, with characters including French settlers and local Arabs, raised questions about the ethics of French colonial policy and governance. This aspect of the book inspired a 2013 novel by Kamel Daoud, The Meursault Investigation, focussing on the un-named Arab murder victim. This American hardback edition in the original language (when a paperback edition and translations were already available) reflects the widespread recognition of the importance of Camus' work, for which he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature in 1957
