Laura Grisi is part of the artistic generation that changed assumptions about what a work of art could be. Born in Greece she grew up in Rome and emerged as an artist in Rome's lively artistic, literary, and film community of the mid-60s. Her first body of work shown at the Venice Biennale in 1966, was her 'Variable Paintings', paintings with sliding panels that the viewer could shift to vary the image. The same year, with her next series, the 'Neon Paintings', she was one of the first artist to work in neon, evoking the culture of advertising and commercial design. More recent works, the 'Baroque Series' of wall sculptures, are a kind of diary of her multiple interest. They bring together contemporary visual concerns with a Baroque sense of elaborated forms. Germano Celant writes about these works that 'the passage seems to toward a metaphysical objectivity, toward a concrete memory of history or of her culture'. Her work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions in major European and American museums, as well as in collections of The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Galleria Nazionale d'Arte, Rome, and many others. This book, through an essay-interview by Germano Celant, writings by the artist, and almost 280 photographs, presents an overview of Grisi's career from l965 through the l980's. It is completed by an exhibition history, bibliography, and biographical images from 1965 to 1900.
