Lays Of Ancient Rome
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
New edition of Lord Macaulay's Lays of Ancient Rome with, at the back, Ivry: a Song of the Huguenots (1824), and a fragment of a poem, the Armada (1832). His preface speaks of how much of the Latin poets' accounts of the early history of the Kings and Consuls of Rome, together with the battles they talk of, must be taken as mythological as the public records were destroyed by the Gauls. There is a line drawing on the title page of the Roman authorities remonstrating with a group of citizens next to a statue of Romulus and Remus being suckled by a she-wolf. Marbled end papers and red leather covers with gilt lettering on the spine, which has been damaged. There is a handwritten inscription at the front that reads: Grosvenor Hollins, in remembrance of his school life at Lancaster with the best wishes of his friends, Minna Davies, David Lewis, Queen Square, June 25, 1868.
