C'est Hugo Sandermeur, un inconnu sans metier. Erica s'eprendra de lui passionnement. Elle entrera en lutte avec son pere qui se refuse a la donner en mariage a un vagabond. Ne pouvant resoudre a faire le malheur de ce pere, ne pouvant se resigner a renoncer a son amour, eploree, tete perdue, coeur partage, elle ira trouver la mort au fond d'une eau paisible. Le lecteur verra comment l'affection d'Eloi Dullum fera renaitre la jeune fille pour lui seul, comment tout le village bercera cette illusion et comment l'amour ramenera Hugo Sandermeur, fiance a une ombre, sous le toit du vieil horloger. It's Hugo Sandermeur, an unknown without a job. Erica will fall passionately in love with him. She will enter into struggle with her father who refuses to give her in marriage to a vagabond. Unable to bring about the misfortune of this father, unable to resign herself to renouncing her love, crying, head lost, heart divided, she will find death at the bottom of peaceful water. The reader will see how Eloi Dullum's affection will bring the young girl back to life for him alone, how the whole village will rock this illusion and how love will bring Hugo Sandermeur, engaged to a shadow, back under the old watchmaker's roof.
