(The Three Musketeers) Set between 1625 and 1628, it recounts the adventures of a young man named d'Artagnan (a character based on Charles de Batz-Castelmore d'Artagnan) after he leaves home to travel to Paris, hoping to join the Musketeers of the Guard. Although d'Artagnan is not able to join this elite corps immediately, he is befriended by three of the most formidable musketeers of the age - Athos, Porthos and Aramis, "the three musketeers" or "the three inseparables" - and becomes involved in affairs of state and at court. (Twenty Years After) The novel follows events in France during the Fronde, during the childhood reign of Louis XIV, and in England near the end of the English Civil War, leading up to the victory of Oliver Cromwell and the execution of King Charles I. Through the words of the main characters, particularly Athos, Dumas comes out on the side of the monarchy in general, or at least the text often praises the idea of benevolent royalty. His musketeers are valiant and just in their efforts to protect young Louis XIV and the doomed Charles I from their attackers. Two books both entirely in French. Garnier Brothers editions - 1963 and 1962. Two clothbound hardcover books in very good condition commensurate with age. See-through plastic dust jackets to protect the covers. Paper slip slotted between cover and dust jacket designating title, edition and author. Clean pages. Some foxing on page edges. Includes various images and photographs. Name of original owner and stamp on front endpapers. They come in a slip case decorated with illustrations of scenes from the book that is quite shelf worn. 861pg./1038pg.
