Nichiren (1222-1282) was a figure of central importance in the history of Japanese Buddhism. His preachings inspired the formation of a new sect, one that bears his name and remains today one of the largest Buddhist groups in Japan. Challenging the elite appropriations of Buddhism that had developed in the previous era, Nichiren attempted to make Buddhism more accessible to the masses by simplifying its texts and practices and by stressing its message of universal salvation. Written between 1255 and 1282, the letters in this volume demonstrate Nichiran's extraordinary knowledge of Buddhist and secular writings and focus on his assertion of the absolute superiority of the Lotus Sutra and his argument that following any other sutra was not merely an exercise in futility, but a blasphemous slander of the Dharma. Communicating the major doctrinal themes of his teachings, the vivid metaphors and clear arguments of Nichiren's correspondence also reveal the rhetorical flourish of a powerful spiritual guide. Alongside Burton Watson's lucid and accurate translations, editor Philip B. Yampolsky provides a brief introduction to each letter, notes, a glossary of terms, appendixes of Chinese and Sanskrit names, and a bibliography. This unique collection will appeal to Nichiren Buddhists as well as scholars and students of Buddhism, Japanese thought, religion, and history. Book and dust jacket are in very good condition.
