Lettres de Madame Rabutin-Chantal, Marquise de Sevigne, A Madame la Comtesse de Grignan, Tome Second French text. Volume 2 only. Marie de Rabutin-Chantal, marquise de Sevigne (1626-1696) was a French aristocrat, remembered for her letter-writing. Most of her letters, celebrated for their wit and vividness, were addressed to her daughter. She is revered in France as one of the great icons of French 17th-century literature. Madame de Sevigne corresponded with her daughter for nearly thirty years. A clandestine edition, containing twenty-eight letters or portions of letters, was published in 1725, followed by two others the next year. Pauline de Simiane, Mme de Sevigne's granddaughter, decided to officially publish her grandmother's correspondence from 1734 onward. This edition was printed in 1726 in The Hague, making it one of the rare first ones printed. The book is in reasonable condition for its age. The leather binding has some areas of loss, specifically near the spine. Spine cracked at the back. Water stain at the bottom of the pages in the last part of the book, which appears to be old damage. Hardly any foxing inside. Corners are bumped. Pages inside are clean and very legible.
