This, the first book by the American naturalist/ornithologist Harriet (aka Olive) Thorne Miller, was first published in 1875, and brought together two series of her magazine articles for children about the young of various species and genera, residents of land, water, and air. Each is delightfully written, presenting the subject as a person whom the young reader might enjoy meeting - and they are charmingly illustrated by an uncredited artist (possibly the author herself). Harriet Mann Miller (pen names Olive Thorne and Olive Thorne Miller; 1831-1918) was an American author, naturalist, and ornithologist, one of the first three women raised to elective membership in the American Ornithologists' Union. She wrote stories for leading magazines, and her books include: "Little Folks in Feathers and Fur" (1875), "Queer Pets at Marcy's" (1880), "Little People of Asia" (1882), "Birds' Ways" (1885), "In Nesting Time" (1888), and also a serial story entitled, "Nimpo's Troubles", published in the St. Nicholas Magazine, in 1874. Our book contains both series of 'Feathers and Fur', and is in remarkably good general condition for its age, bound in red cloth with black & gilt decoration on the front and spine, and impressed border to the back. The exterior is somewhat ageworn, the spine quite dulled and the back cover rather faded round the edges - but there is remarkably little physical wear (some shelf wear to top & tail of spine, and some slight bumping of corners). All page edges gilt, rather dulled to the top, but bright on the fore-edge and bottom edge. Inside, the front fep is missing, and the first gathering of 30 pages is therefore becoming a little detached from the spine, but apart from this, the sewn binding is firm with no loose pages, and pages are mostly clean, with just a few marks here and there; no sign of foxing seen. The rear endpaper is broken, but both portions are present, so the final gathering is still firmly attached.
