Luxury Staunton Chess Men, ornately carved in exotic Rosewood - a fine example of craftmanship and creativity applied to the classic design. Beautifully crafted from rosewood. Mughal influence. Intricate carving. 4.25 inch (108 mm) king. 4 queens. Weighted for perfect balance. Bases covered in billiard felt. Certificate of authenticity. Ideal for a 23 inch (60 cm) board. These chess men are quite literally breath taking, not only for the size but the ornate carvings and intricate design. Rosewood is renowned for its many deep and rich hues, often brownish in colour with darker veining. With this significant colour variation, this wood creates uniqueness in chess men as no two sets of pieces will look exactly the same. From the pawn through the ranks to the king, each piece is beautifully crafted with added carving detail to their bases and collars. They are all weighted for perfect balance and the bases are covered in billiard cloth. 'Garvi' is the Hindi word which translates as "proud", and of course no chess piece is as proud as the King, standing regally at 4.25 inches tall including his very intricate finial. With a Mughal influence, the design of the Queen was inspired by the minarets of the Taj Mahal, a structure built in the 17th century. Her pointed headdress circles a decorative spire that is second in size only to the king's crown. The tabletop rook is a revelation of originality in the Regency Chess Collection. Although still distinctively Staunton in shape, carved from solid rosewood, this outstanding chess piece is nothing if not ornate. And what of the knight, a chess piece many consider to be the most important attacker as well as zonal defender in a game of infinite possibilities. In the Garvi Series it is an arching horse that has been hand carved from the turned base upwards. Upon its curved neck is a thick mane, intricately carved. Due to their imposing size, The Garvi Series chessmen require a board measuring 23 inches (60 cm). We have matched these pieces with a beautiful board from Italy to create The Luxury Staunton Garvi Rosewood and Walnut Grand Chess Set.
