Majolica, a type of tin-glazed earthenware, was first introduced in Britain by Minton at the Great Exhibition of 1851, in imitation of the maiolica of the Italian Renaissance. Their relief-moulded wares decorated with deep, translucent glazes were soon copied and mass-produced by many other manufacturers. The naturalistic wares amongst the most attractive: moulded or modelled leaves, fruit, flowers and sea shells; the Oriental influence was very much in evidence too. Majolica was also made in America and on the Continent, particularly in France and Germany. Majolica was immensely popular by 1860 and a staple product of nearly every major British pottery by 1870, but then declined in the 1880s. British, Continental and American manufacturers are all covered in detail, and there is also advice on collecting and restoration. Majolica - British, Continental and American Wares, 1851 - 1915 by Victoria Bergesen. Published by Barrie & Jenkins Ltd in 1989. pp 224. Hardback with dustjacket - condition - good. Book condition - good: tightly bound, clean boards, clean throughout, no former owner inscription. Dustjacket condition - good.
