'Maori and Settler: a Story of the New Zealand War' by G A Henty. Blackie, n. d. but probably 1950s. Hardback, 352 pp. Dust jacket good - slightly worn at edges but largely nice and bright. A little foxed at inner flaps and underside. Book very good - clean covers, tightly bound, clean throughout. No former owner inscriptions. Yet another ripping yarn, this time set during the conflict between the Maoris and the incoming English settlers. Trigger warnings will proliferate in the minds of the more sensitive 21st century readers; but it should be remembered that the late Victorian Henty was merely voicing attitudes and preconceptions very common among his contemporaries. His hero (a young male, of course), Wilfred, has an equally plucky and level-headed older male friend (please don't raise your eyebrows: this is all very innocent), Mr Atherton, who's a botanist (of all things: but the Victorians were very keen on natural history). The Maoris are mostly depicted as 'bloodthirsty enemies' in contrast to the allegedly much more civilised white settlers; which conveniently ignores the fact that they'd recently had their country forcibly taken away from them, something that they had every right to feel really rather miffed about.
