Map of Scotland 1851 Drawn and Engraved by J. Rapkin with illustrations by N. Whitlock. Handcoloured. This map was originally issued in "The Illustrated Atlas and Modern History of the World" which appears to have been issued in at least two editions, one in 1851 and a later one of 1855. The map was also re-issued in The Royal Dictionary-cyclopaedia for Universal Reference" edited by Thomas Wright in 1862. This map must be an extract from one of the later editions as it shows a submarine telegraph from Portpatrick to Donaghadee in Ireland which was laid in 1852 - after the publication date of the original edition. The photographs are of the actual map for sale. The map measures 362mm high x 259mm wide overall and appears to be printed on canvas-backed paper. There is a gallery sticker on the reverse and a note in ink "Hand-coloured map by Tallis from 1850 edn." but please see our notes above regarding the date of the edition.
