European exploration, during what we may call its "classic period" between 1500 and 1900, is the story of the growth of geographical knowledge, which was recorded and centralized and used as never before. But exploration and discovery are not synonymous, and "discovery" is a relative term, because the lands or routes "discovered" were of course inhabited or known for centuries before the Europeans arrived, and "newly discovered" routes across the Sahara or through the Rockies invariably represented knowledge simply borrowed from native people. The Europeans' *true* discovery was that all of this knowledge could be merged into an accurate map of the world, which in turn became a vital tool of political power. This book concentrates on the intellectual context of exploration -- How did explorers and their patrons understand their expanding world? What were they really seeking? How did they balance the known and the unknown in their minds? -- and attempts to display these ideas through the maps that the explorers used or created. This large-format book, hardbound in turquoise cloth and presented in a cardboard slipcase, is illustrated throughout in full colour, depicting mankind's ever-evolving attempts to map the world.
