This text is the Second Edition of Mary E. L. Cox's Practical Cookery, which is set out in a clear and concise way for a wide range of readers, from amateur chefs to more experienced people who enjoy cookery already to students who were studying domestic sciences. The four sections of the book focus on Cookery Methods, Food Values and Meal Planning, Food Preservation and Storage, and finally War-Time Cookery and Catering. As this text was published in 1943 and therefore mid-Second World War, some of the recipes are toned down to reflect what could be made using the limited rations of the era. However, Cox also includes instructions for foodstuffs that would have been considered decadent at the time, as Cox is hopeful that once the War has ended, these items can be made once again. This book serves as a fascinating historical piece. Book is in remarkable condition, considering it was published in 1943. However, there are some signs of age including fading and wear to cover, mild tanning and foxing on pages and page edges, plus previous owner's inscription at front. Contains outdated language that reflects the attitudes of the time.
