Full title ..... "Memoirs of Marie Antoinette, by Madam Campan, First Lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen. Newly edited with Notes etc.". An intriguing inscription is written on the front paste-down, dated "4/4/15", with what looks to be the initials "ARW". On the title page, "M. N. Waller, 4/4/15", the presumed recipient and owner. The inscription and initials are thought to be of the editor Alfred Rayney Waller, though we are unable to corroborate this .... please see photos. This title belongs to Hutchinson's "Library of Standard Biographies". Taken from a Bibliographical note within the book: "The 'Memoires sur la vie privee de la Reine Marie Antoinette' were published in 1823 [the year following Madame Campan's death]. The present reprint is based on the second English edition of that year by Henry Colburn & Co., under the following title: 'Memoires of the Private Life of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France and Navarre, To which are added Recollections, Sketches, and Anecdotes, illustrative of the Reigns of Louis XIV., Louis XV., and Louis XVI. By Madame Campan, First lady of the Bedchamber to the Queen.'". 512pp. Good (approaching Very Good). Beige cloth-covered boards, aged and rubbed, with a variety of marks and stains; bumping to spine top and tail. Binding remains good. Endpapers and index pages show a degree of foxing, but the content pages are generally very clean, with only occasional foxing / marks to leaves. Text remains very clear.
