The Pinacoteca do Estado de Sao Paulo, an institution of the State Secretariat for Culture, presents at Estacao Pinacoteca, from December 6th to March 1st, 2015, an exhibition by Mona Hatoum, one of the most prominent names in world contemporary art. Initially, the artist attracted public attention with video works and performances in which the body gives expression to a divided reality, besieged by manifestations of political and social control. In the 1990s, his work gradually moved into the three-dimensional field, with large-scale sculptures and installations. Everyday objects dominate these works: items such as chairs, beds and household utensils, when modified or enlarged, represent a familiar reality that reflects a suspicious, insidious and hostile world. These works seem vulnerable and disconcerting, and leave no room for any fixed meaning. What is familiar is no longer familiar, and what is expected is replaced by new visual and conceptual associations. The artist thus outlines a flexible language that is unique to her, in which several levels -- formal, conceptual and political -- interact consistently. Curated by Chiara Bertola, curatorial coordination by Jose Augusto Ribeiro and Natasha Barzaghi Geenen, the 30 works selected for the exhibition, Mona Hatoum's first solo exhibition in a museum in Latin America, present a cross-section of the artist's works from the 1980s onwards. This is a broad view of his production, from his first experiences in performance to the unprecedented installation developed especially for this exhibition.
