'Mrs. Jack: a Biography of Isabella Stewart Gardner', by Louise Hall Tharp. Little, Brown and Company, 1965. Hardback, with original dust wrapper, 365 pp. Good condition. Many black and white photographic plates. Detailed Notes, as well as a helpful Index. One inscription in dark blue ink on the inner front endpaper: "So that you may remember Boston". Any art lover who visits New York will make a beeline for the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. If you visit its present-day website, you'll read this contemporary account of its founder: "Mrs. Jack Gardner is one of the seven wonders of Boston. There is nobody like her in any city in this country. She is a millionaire Bohemienne. She is the leader of the smart set, but she often leads where none dare follow . . . She imitates nobody; everything she does is novel and original." What a lady! And in the pages of this excellent biography, you'll be taken on a whirlwind tour of her colourful life. A very young but already astonishingly knowledgeable and authoritative Bernard Berenson is there (he was to play a central role in Mrs Gardner's career as an art collector), as well as that great painter, John Singer Sargent, not to mention a host of other celebrities of the social and art scenes in late nineteenth century New York. American publishers often put their British counterparts to shame: this is, predictably, yet another beautifully printed and bound book from Little, Brown and Company.
