This autobiography begins with the author's birth in Moscow in 1812, on the eve of the arrival of Napoleon's Grand Army. Son of an apathetic Russian nobleman and his common-law German wife, Herzen pledged himself to the cause of revolutionary liberty, and was arrested while studying at Moscow University, and banished to a provincial town. This volume ends with the birth of his first son (with his cousin Natalie) in 1839. Orange illustrated dust jacket with black text. Various scuffs, marks and discolouration. Small chips and wear to edges and corners. Price clipped. Red cloth covered boards, with gilt text within black decorated panel to spine. Bookseller's sticker to front pastedown. Text block is clean and tight.
