The dramatic story of how an American citizen Betty Mahmoody and her daughter escaped from Iran, where they had gone from the USA with her husband, for a holiday & family meeting - he being Iranian by birth, but had studied and qualified in both the UK and USA in the 1960s, and where he was a University mathematics Professor, then an engineer, was employed by NASA, then changing to medical school and becoming an anesthesiologist. Unable in the end to freely leave Iran, Betty had to make secret arrangements to leave, which became prolonged and fraught, The husband later published his account, denying much of Betty's book's story; she also published a continuation; he also collaborated in making the documentary film, Without My Daughter, attempting to contradict the allegations, and published a further book. He died in 2009. Betty and her daughter (and sons) live in the USA still. In 1990, the film was shot in the United States, Turkey and Israel. The main characters: Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) and Sayyed Bozorg "Moody" Mahmoody (Alfred Molina).
