Red cloth binding with silver title on spine. Slight scuffs and sticker residue on back cover. Block tight and appears unread. Near fine condition. In 'passport' format, with a rectangle cut out of the front cover and front fly leaf to reveal the name of the photographer. One of a series of exhibition catalogues in this format by the gallery Espace Photographique de Paris; exhibition dates 5 November 1988- 29 January 1989. With introductory essay on the exhibition by Henri Chapier, 'Les inedits d'Helmut Newton' (unpublished work by H N). End matter includes a brief biography of Newton; listings of his group exhibitions and one-man shows; lists of public collections that hold his work; a bibliography and filmography. Contains 30 portraits of celebrities and unknowns taken 1981-88, each reproduced in b/w with caption on facing page, plus frontispiece portrait of Newton by Alice Springs. The images include iconic portraits of Sigourney Weaver, and Jodie Foster, and David Lynch, and informal photographs such as one of David Hockey showing his hearing aid. Notwithstanding the small page size, the quality of reproduction and printing makes the images pin-sharp and highlights Newton's mastery of composition, contrast and texture. A scarce copy of a catalogue that shows this photographer at the height of his powers.
