This book, which has now established itself as a classic introduction to its subject, is about Africa and Africans, south of the Sahara, during the fifteen hundred years or so before the colonial period began. Its aim is to present in outline what is now known, and what it now seems reasonable to believe, about some leading aspects and achievements of African life and civilisation during that time; and thus to contribute to an understanding of the origins and background of Africa today. Professor Thomas Hodgkin has written of this book: 'Those who come to African history mainly through an interest in contemporary problems have, many of them, enjoyed Davidson's Africa with the kind of enthusiasm with which Keats first looked into Chapman's Homer: it has added another dimension to their thinking'. Book Condition: The book cover is quite worn, with noticeable wear around the edges, creases along the spine and towards the corners of the front and back. There is some discolouration and marks on the cover, and a small sticker on the back from a previous seller. The page edges have some wear, and heavy stains. The pages are in good condition, but towards the end there is a crease that becomes more prominent the closer to the end you go. The final few pages have dog-ear folds. The binding is in very good condition.
