William Maxwell, whose name is treasured and revered as the founder of the Cardoness family, was born 3 weeks after the death of his father. The diary begins just immediately after he had finished his college course. He was 22 years old. It follows his life through his disappointment at being forced to stand inactive because his Church principles were distasteful to the then ruling party, his decision to study medicine, his brief imprisonment, his soldiers life and gallant conduct in the field. If a life of exemplary piety, inflexible integrity, true patriotism and active benevolence, deserves to be recorded, William Maxwell's certainly has an undoubted title.
