Condition: Fair with some damage to the spine 1871 New edition. XXVIII, 753, (1) pages. With numerous illustrations in the text and several plates in the appendix as well as a plate engraved by Adlard as a frontispiece. John Frederick William Herschel (1792-1871) discovered that the Magellanic Clouds were made up of stars, published various star catalogs and introduced the Julian date into astronomy. He was knighted in 1831, became President of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1848 and became Royal Mint Master of the Royal Mint in 1850. In 1832 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. On May 31, 1842, he was accepted as a foreign member of the Prussian Order of Merit for Science and Arts. Among other things, he coined the term photography and distinguished himself by further developing photographic technology. Also bizarre episodes, such as a false article published in August 1835 in the daily newspaper New York Sun about a moon observation allegedly carried out by Herschel, during which he is said to have seen human beings with wings, could not diminish Herschel's recognition and impact.
