Oxygen poisoning is, after decompression sickness, the second most important threat to the diver. This book is the first to be entirely devoted to the subject. The author, an acknowledged authority in the field, covers all situations where oxygen or hypertoxic gas mixtures are employed at increased pressures, and reviews many of the factors which may affect the incidence of poisoning. The book includes an account of the unique series of human experiments in which oxygen poisoning under water was fully explored for the first time and the safe times and depths for diving on oxygen were established. The full detailed results of this classical study have never been published. There is also a review of all other important studies of oxygen toxicity in the diver up to the present day, with a full discussion concerning the safety of the modern practises in oxygen diving. Considerable care has been taken to determine the original details of these investigations, as much of this material has not been published. After the marked toxicity of oxygen under water had been so clearly demonstrated in the 1940s, there was an almost universal return to the use of air in free swimming and shallow water diving (up to 50 metres). However, air diving has a number of disadvantages and it is now being supplemented by the use of oxygen-nitrogen mixtures. Mixture diving is far more economical of gas, and it allows the diver to go considerably deeper without the risk of oxygen poisoning or the need for staged decompression. Much emphasis has been placed in the book on the dangers of the imprudent use of mixtures. The proposition that certain divers, and particularly mixture divers (carbon dioxide retainers) are prone to underventilation and carbon dioxide retention, with increased sensitivity to oxygen poisoning, is carefully examined. Although this book is written primarily for diving experts it is hoped that many of the diving fraternity will browse, enjoy and use it for reference. First edition hardback in unclipped dustjacket published in association with the SPA Ltd in 1992.
