Beginning with the Renaissance Mr. Helm traces the growth of states through the Reformation and Counterreformation to the Wars Religion of the 17th century. His field stretches from France to Russia and from Sweden in the north to Italy. In addition to political history, he records the economic and scientific developments of the period. A special feature of the book is the extracts from contemporary sources that conclude each chapter. The book is divided into fourteen distinct sections/ time periods. Different sections focus on different countries. There are seven illustrations /maps.
