Between 1830 and 1852, two decades of rapid industrial growth and urbanisation, a series of events raised a challenge to the old monarchical and aristocratic social and political order in Great Britain. The politics of those years was enlivened by two of the most hotly contested issues of the nineteenth century, the reform battle of 1831-32 and the great free trade vs agricultural protection battle of 1845-46. Both were regarded as victories for the urban middle classes; but the landed interest, though its political authority was certainly weakened, was far from beaten. Party and Politics is a reflective analysis, by one of the leading historians of the period, of the contests for power between the great landowners and the representatives of manufacturing and trading capital and also of the establishment, as a consequence of those contests, of the modern British party system. The great reform act and the repeal of the corn laws receive thorough attention, and analysis of the working classes' failure to enter the "political nation" is accompanied by discussion ofthe social legislation of the period (especially the highly controversial new poor law of 1834), legislation which has provoked much debate about the nature and significance of the early Victorian "revolution in government" and the laying of the "foundations of the welfare state." Detailed attention is also given to the shaping of the electoral landscape after the 1832 reform act.
