This book is a little different from most of this author's works, being neither historical, nor romantic, but rather a study of the relationship between two sisters. One of her four 'contemporary' novels, it (along with the three others) was suppressed by the author when she had achieved greater success with her historical/romance works. It is therefore of particular interest, being much less commonly available. This facsimile reprint is thus a welcome addition to the field - though there are some interesting anomalies (described below). Georgette Heyer (1902-1974) was an English novelist and short-story writer, in both the Regency romance and detective fiction genres. Her writing career began in 1921, with the novel "The Black Moth". After her marriage in 1925 she spent several years in Tanganyika Territory and Macedonia, returning to England in 1929 (the year "Pastel" was published). After "These Old Shades" became popular despite its release during the General Strike, Heyer decided that publicity was not necessary for good sales. For the rest of her life she refused to grant interviews, telling a friend: "My private life concerns no one but myself and my family." Heyer essentially established the historical romance genre and its subgenre 'Regency romance', these latter inspired by Jane Austen. To ensure accuracy, Heyer collected reference works and kept detailed notes on all aspects of Regency life. Whilst some critics thought the novels too detailed, others considered this Heyer's greatest asset. Our book is in very good condition, bound in dark red/brown cloth with title etc in gilt on the spine, and with no dust jacket (as issued). The binding is tight; pages all clean and bright with no foxing. The interesting point relates to the colophon, which gives a copyright date of 1910, when the author would have been just 7 years old. The book was in fact published in 1929, by Longmans & Co. (British Library database). As the colophon gives the publisher as Harper & Brothers, New York, one has to speculate whether the text comes from a pirated edition. A book for further research, perhaps!
