Patrick Hall (very Rare Tasmanian Art Monograph) / Grace Cochrane
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
This hardback book is in excellent condition. The boards are in excellent condition, with just light shelf wear. Internally a little colour has transferred from the coloured end paper to the corner of the title page, but otherwise the pages are in excellent condition - clean, tight and unmarked, with many clear photographs of the artist's work. Patrick Hall was selected by the Tasmanian Arts Advisory Board and its specialist advisory panels as the first artist to be recognised in the monograph series. Patrick Hall is best known for a series of aluminium-clad pieces of furniture made in the form of cabinets with drawers. Offering glimpses into how objects and their stories can tell us 'what it is to be human', he includes in each one, elements that leave his own observations of 'traces and little evidences' but which also have great resonance for others. The small found and intricately fabricated sculptural forms, on which we can speculate and wonder, are usually encased behind glass and placed in the face of each drawer or on top of the cabinet. These pieces also contain often heart-breakingly wistful and intimate engraved textual observations and invented secret stories that lie beside each object or within each piece. Hall thinks of these works as emotional filing cabinets and his obsession with objects and stories as 'an attempt to store and order the intangible'.
