Penelope's Labour - (1st Ed'n, 4 Traditional, 9 Contemporary Tapestry Designs, 1 By Grayson Perry)

The accompanying booklet to this collection of images states baldly "Weaving is one of the great neglected acts of artistic creation, and yet its thread runs through the western literary imagination". Penelope is of course the classic case of a weaver, making and unmaking her work in an effort to avoid marriage to a suitor before her husband Odysseus returns from the Trojan war. An exhibition put together in 2011 brought together a mixture of woven pieces (tapestries, carpets and embroideries) from antiquity and modern designers such as Craigie Horsfield, Marc Quinn and Grayson Perry - now much better known for his pottery and ceramics. Our copy is complete, and in surprisingly good condition, since there is no fixed binding. The outer cover is of ruby-red silk with gilt image of a weaver's hands at work, title etc on the front, title in gilt lettering on the spine, and name of publisher and exhibition sponsor in gilt on the back. Sadly, the cover has at some time suffered exposure to liquid, which has left noticeable stains on both front and back, but not penetrated to the decorative paper lining within.
