Jean-Jacques Rousseau wrote so widely on so many subjects that it is perhaps not surprising that his thoughts were filleted and published as 'Pensees', quite soon after his death. Here is the first volume of a set of two, published (intriguingly) in 'An VIII' - i.e. 1799, the French Republican Calendar being in force at the time. Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712-1778) was a Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer. His political philosophy influenced the progress of the Age of Enlightenment throughout Europe, as well as aspects of the French Revolution and the development of modern political, economic, and educational thought. Our little book is, not surprisingly, rather ageworn externally - bound in half-leather with mottled paper-covered boards which are rubbed and have suffered some loss. The leather is all rubbed, and the top of the spine is broken. Title etc can just be made out on the spine in what were originally gilt letters with floral motifs and book no. I all within 5 gilt lined sections. All page edges coloured red. Inside, however, the binding is tight, pages clean and bright, and there is no sign of foxing. An intriguing little survivor from a significant historical period.
