Philips' Student's Atlas of Ancient and Modern Geography, with a Copious Consulting Index - William Hughes FRGS. London: George Philip and Son. First edition 1887. pp 40 plus 46 pages of index. Black morocco with gilt badge. Spine strip missing but there is a six inch fragment inside the atlas. The boards are free of the block but they are in a good enough state to undergo repair work. Edges and corners bruised. A grand old volume, whose proud owner inscribed the title page in 1888 and wrote a header for each map end paper. The maps do not extend into the polar regions, which were unknown territory at the time. The longest river is stated as the Mississippi and the second highest summit as Kanchenjunga. St Pauls correctly given as 365 feet.
