Pictures And Royal Portraits Illustrative Of English And Scottish History, From The Introduction Of Christianity To The Present Time. Engraved From Important Works By Distinguished Modern Painters, And From Authentic State Portraits. With Descriptive Historical Sketches, By Thomas Archer, Author Of Appendix To De Bonnechose's "History Of France," Etc. Volume I & II (London: Blackie & Son: Paternoster Buildings; Glasgow And Edinburgh. 1878) This 1878 hardcover book is in an acceptable condition. It is both volumes 1 and 2 bound together into the one book. There are no internal markings or annotations. The text pages are for the most part clean. There is the odd mark or blemish here and there but the text remains legible at all points. The plates seem to attract more staining and foxing. Any foxing present is only mild however and does not affect whole pages or every page. The page edges and ends of this book are clean and the pages continue to sit together well. As the binding is slightly unstable, there are some pages or groups of pages that protrude from the edge of the text block (please see photographs). The front hinge of this book is broken to the point where there is a large gap between the spine material and bound edge of the text block (please see photograph). There are also several other breaks between pages as you continue through the book. Externally, both of the book's covers are intact. The book is half calf with maroon boards. There is wear around almost all edges. The corners are bumped with the boards exposed. The leather areas are scuffed and marked. The damage is particularly obvious on the book's reverse (please see photograph). There is a small amount of loss at the bottom of the spine. The gilt lettering and decoration remain vibrant. This is a used book in an acceptable condition. A fascinating piece. (PLEASE NOTE: Due to the weight and value of this item, it will be dispatched by courier.)
