Published in 1942, as WWII raged on, this book's aim was to show the British public the faces of the brave fighter pilots who had done such extraordinary things in the air against the German Luftwaffe. Each pilot is introduced with a short biography, and the book begins with a brief 'history' of the events leading up to, and including, the Battle of Britain. The reproduced portraits were clearly executed in charcoal, and are remarkably evocative. A foreword by Air Chief Marshal Sir Sholto Douglas, and an introduction by Air Vice-Marshall J. C. Slessor complete the whole. Captain Cuthbert Julian Orde (1888-1968) was an artist and First World War pilot. He is best known for his war art, especially his portraits of Allied Battle of Britain pilots. Our book is in good general condition, but has of course suffered a degree of external wear since its appearance in 1942. The bi-coloured cloth covers are somewhat grubby and a little stained, and the blue portion has faded around the spine, along with the lettering on the spine itself. There is, however, remarkably little physical wear - some rubbing of edges, slight bumping of corners, and softening at the top & tail of the spine. Inside, the sewn binding is generally firm with no loose pages; pages are lightly tanned throughout, but clean and bright. Rear endpaper quite badly mottled with ?damp patches; front endpaper similarly discoloured, but largely covered by newspaper or magazine clippings showing airmen in various groups. Top R/H/ corner of the front fep bears a previous owner's name dated September 16th, 1942.
