Pioneers and Progress - the History of Southey and District Published by Southey History Committee, 1980 Southey is a town in Saskatchewan, Canada, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 1980. This book describes the development of the settlement from 1905 to the 1960s, through the families that settled the land in Canada's grain-growing prairies. Settlers came from England, Scotland and Ireland as well as Germany, Norway, Hungary and Romania. The arrival of the railway prompted the development and the new village grew rapidly in the early part of the 20th century. By 1910, the village as it was then had a bank, school and hotel/cafe, as well as tradespeople such as blacksmiths, shoemakers, bookkeepers and confectioners, as well as farm supply outlets and warehousing. Churches of several denominations were also quickly built. Southey was named after the English poet, Robert Southey. Most of the streets are named after English and Scottish poets. The bulk of the book consists of histories and reminiscences of the families and people of Southey over the years. It is well illustrated with photographs of local residents and buildings. In 2021, the census shows 832 people still living in Southey. Neat dedication on front flyleaf. Slight foxing on front flyleaves, book pages clean.
