Polytechnics: A Report

Merchant's Category: Media> Books
The polytechnics set up by Anthony Crosland, Secretary of State for Education and Science in 1966, were "comprehensive academic communities" of element in what came to be known as the 'binary' policy in higher education. This first report on the polytechnics and the binary policy traces the development of the policies from their historic roots over a century or more ago, through the period of expansion and confusion in the mid-1960s. The authors examine how the polytechnics were inappropriate institutions for the purposes set for them, and why the policy is failing. An interesting read when most of them become universities nowadays. A hardback in blue cloth with gilt title on spine, protected by a pictorial dustjacket which is scrubbed and torn to all edges with substantial creases and chippings extended to the rear flap. Particularly, a small tear near the front top corner, and a couple of long tears to the rear top edge. Yellow highligher marks appear on many pages, rfep and the rear pastedown are filled with pencil notes. Overall, a well used book in neat and tight block - a rare report.
