The Portfolio Collection is a sumptuously illustrated series embracing a broad spectrum of artists working within the diverse field of textiles. Each volume is an inspirational visit to the studio of an internationally-renowned textile artist accompanied by large format photographs: this one featuring the work of Japanese artist Chiyoko Tanaka. Prior to the 1973 Lausanne International Tapestry Biennale, contemporary Japanese textile art had been marginalised. But the six Japanese artists who exhibited at that prestigious event revealed radically new styles and the art form and its reputation was enhanced. It was Tanaka's 1984 series Grinded Fabric that sealed her reputation. She traced the texture of the earth through a process she referred to as grinding. Her work with graduations of black symbolised the passage of time. Her work was informed by the environment of Kyoto, ancient capital of Japan, where she lived and worked. This book offers a superb way of looking in close detail at her intriguing work. The condition is very good with just some light scratching to the dustjacket covers. Clean throughout and tightly bound with no former owner inscriptions.
