Programme (6 sheets including covers) for the revue "Wake Up and Dream". Music and lyrics by Cole Porter and Ivor Novello. Starring Jessie Matthews and Tilly Losch. Produced by Charles B. Cochran. Palace Theatre, Manchester, 1929. Signed on the cover in pencil by one of the the choreographers for the show, Sonnie Hale. Stapes are slightly rusty and the front cover is partly detached at top and bottom. Some toning towards the edges of the covers, but internally clean. Overall, Very Good Minus. "Wake Up and Dream" was a musical revue with a book by John Hastings Turner, with music and lyrics by Cole Porter, Ivor Novello and others. The most famous song from the revue is the Cole Porter standard "What Is This Thing Called Love?" The piece was originally called "Charles B. Cochran's 1929 Revue". Try-outs began on 5 March 1929 at the Palace Theatre in Manchester, and it opened three weeks later at the London Pavilion and ran for 263 performances. After the London production closed, the show was modified for a Broadway production and the new version again had a try-out in Manchester. The present programme appears to be for this production, as it states on the cover "Prior to Presentation at the Selwyn Theatre, New York". The Broadway production indeed opened at the Selwyn Theatre on 30 December 1929 and closed on 26 April 1930 after 136 performances. It was produced by Arch Selwyn in association with Cochran. The choreographers reprised their work, and the cast featured Jack Buchanan, Jessie Matthews and Tilly Losch.
