Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Music & Sound Recordings
This is the vocal score of Sergei Prokofiev's opera 'War and Peace' (Op. 91) (Voina i mir) used in the first British staged performance by Sadler's Wells Opera on 11 October 1972. Prokofiev's opera is based on Tolstoy's 1869 novel chronicling Russia during the Napoleonic era, including the French invasion of Russia and its aftermath. The two volumes are believed to have belonged to Eric Shilling (1920-2006) the English bass-baritone who sang the role of Count Rostov in the 1972 production. They include some of his rehearsal pencil markings. The libretto is in English. For nearly thirty years Eric Shilling was a key member of the Sadler's Wells Opera which became English National Opera in 1974. Edition: Anglo-Soviet Music Press Ltd / Boosey & Hawkes (1972) from Sadler's Wells Library. Condition: Good - some marks. Covers have the title and library number (20) written in black felt pen and are marked 'Sadlers Wells Opera 1972'. The singer's roles are written on the cover in red biro.
