Public Culture In The Early Republic: Peale's Museum And Its Audience
Merchant: Oxfam
Merchant's Category: Media> Books
Originally founded as a fine art museum and gallery by Charles Wilson Peale, the Peale Museum soon expanded into natural history and science, one of the first museums of both art and science in America. Brigham sets this museum in it's cultural context of early American history, alongside Peale's goal to 'establish a universally educated public' - whilst his audience was largely limited by class, race, and gender. An excellent examination of cultural ideologies in the American Republic, a topic which has influences still felt greatly today. The book itself is in excellent condition, with minimal wear, making a great reading copy.
