Puckoon - Spike Milligan. Published by Anthony Blond, Hardback with dust jacket, 1963. Second impression. Both first and second impressions produced in the same month, October 1963. Puckoon was Spike Milligan's first full-length novel, and his only major work of fiction. Set in a sleepy Irish village, situated right on the border of Northern Ireland and the Republic, in 1924. The protagonist of the novel is the feckless Dan Milligan, a man so lazy that the author is obliged to take direct action to prevent him spending the entire novel lounging about at home; thus alerted to his status as a fictional character, Dan frequently breaks the fourth wall, speaking directly to the writer about the trouble he has been made to endure. Spike Milligan, born in Ahmednagar, approximately 250 kms west of the then Bombay (now Mumbai) during the era of the British Raj, was a British then Irish citizen. During the war, Milligan was in the Royal Artillery and played in a jazz band for the entertainment of his fellow soldiers. Condition: Fair. Tanning is present around the mage margins inside, but more so around the edges, plus a small number of pages are a little creased at the beginning of the book. The top page edges are dusty. The dust jacket shows wear and tear and is somewhat tanned; however, a glimpse underneath the dust jacket will reveal the bright emerald green of the hard cover. The corner is missing from the front fly-leaf. There is a signature in pencil on the front free end paper.
