Push Braces Ortho Thumb Brace CMC to help treat CMC osteoarthritis and pain What causes thumb pain? Thumb arthritis is extremely common with one in every four or five people in Europe suffering from this form of thumb joint pain. It is considered as wear and tear of the articular cartilage, and it particularly affects people between 40 and 60 years of age. Arthritis of the joint at the base of the thumb, with a weakened ligaments, results in functional instability. What are the symptoms of thumb osteoarthritis? Symptoms include thumb pain, reduced hand function, weakness and stiffness. Arthritis of the thumb is an extreme disability as the use of the hand is fundamental to most areas of normal function. How can the Push Braces Ortho Thumb Brace CMC help treat CMC osteoarthritis and pain? Designed in collaboration with eminent hand therapists Judy Colditz and Nettie Koekebakker, this thumb brace has taken the world by storm since it was introduced. It is now recognised as the best on the market for the treatment of CMC joint injuries. The new brace differs fundamentally from existing thumb supports. The Push CMC stabilises the joint at the base of the thumb and positions the thumb metacarpal correctly. This creates an arch, which ensures a proper hand grip. It provides pain relief for a previously stressed thumb while allowing freedom in the other joints of the thumb and wrist and helps to create optimal functioning of the hand. The Push CMC thumb brace eliminates the previous necessity to have custom made orthotics to stabilise the CMC-1 thumb joint. The ground breaking design achieves this by having a pre-formed flexible plastic enclosure which envelops the base of the thumb and the bracing effect is created with an arc of aluminium following the contours of the lower aspect of the thumb embedded in the plastic. The aluminium splint can be shaped for individual thumb contours and optimal stabilisation of the joint. The brace is completed by fastening the two Velcro straps around the back of the hand. The fact that this orthosis can be fitted by the patient is a huge step forward in the treatment of pain associated with this common form of arthritis of the thumb joint.
