Brown cloth binding; spine missing, front cover detached. Gilt title on front. Front cover faded at edges. Corners and edges badly worn and bumped. Edges of block dusty. Some foxing but plates mostly clean. Owner name on front endpaper. See photos for condition. The spine has been reinforced with pages from an English accounts ledger, so the plates may have been purchased loose in Rome and bound in England. This is the second edition of a work originally published by Antonelli in 1843 with fewer plates. The 58 plates were engraved by Allessandro Moschetti, mostly from his own drawings, with a picture area of approximately 225 x 165mm. They show Rome as it was experienced by upper-class tourists in the 1840s: many monuments in ruins, the temple of Antoninus Pius converted into a customs office, an artist painting in the Forum, and performing animals next to the arch of Septimus Severus. The selection of plates is close to the copy in the Getty Research Institute, but with some differences in selection and ordering. The full list of subjects is, in order: 1. Pianta di Roma, 1848. 2.
