The centres of Leeds and Bradford are separated by only 10 miles and yet the railway history of the two cities is very different. The wool men of Bradford, a city situation in an almost closed valley, wanted improved transport links both east and west, while Leeds focussed upon Hull, the port which handled the city's booming export trade to the continent. The history of Bradford is one of the the opportunities missed whilst that of Leeds is one of the successful development. The result is that, to this day, the standard of rails services to the two cities varies considerably. In this, volume Stephen Batty outlines the long and illustrious railway history of the Leeds / Bradford area, and brings the story right up to date with the success of the High Speed Train and the recent controversy surrounding electrification which highlight the continuing discrepancies between the services provided in Leeds and Bradford. This title is lavishly illustrated with over 180 quality photographs and several line drawings. The book is essential reading for all with an interest in the railway history of this fascinating part of the industrial West Riding of Yorkshire.
