Friedrich Cerha born 17 February 1926 is an Austrian composer and conductor. In 1958 he, together with Kurt Schwertsik, created the ensemble die reihe, which was an important instrument for the spreading of contemporary music in Austria. Apart from his compositions, Cerha widely earned a reputation as an interpreter of the works of Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern his affinity for the works of the second Viennese school culminated in the completion of Alban Berg's opera Lulu by finishing the instrumentation of the 3rd act and filling the gaps in the score premiered by Pierre Boulez. in Paris, 1979. 1990 Composition of the Second String Quartet commission of the Concours international de quatuor a cordes d'Evian. 1991 Premiere of the First String Quartet at the Mozart Week in Salzburg. Premiere of the Second String Quartet in Evian. As an Austrian, Friedrich Cerha is also a representative of those of his compatriots who in a tragic phase of history took the only honest path by actively fighting against fascism. As director of die reihe, Cerha never pushed his own compositions into the foreground, but he was, from the very beginning, a hard worker at his desk and produced pieces which have acquired a music historical significance. "It is not an exaggeration, but rather it must be said this way and no other way: without Friedrich Cerha, music history would have been different. It is thanks to this that after 1945 in Vienna, which was explicitly anti-modern at the time, new music found its way from the underground to today's prosperity and diversity largely due to the passionate, persistent commitment of his personality. While official Austria resolutely ignored the zero hour, as part of the Viennese post-war avant-garde he started the fermentation process in cellars and shops from which the innovative side of Austrian cultural life emerged. In the 1950s He gained first-hand knowledge from members of the Vienna School, from the Darmstadt summer courses and from outsiders like Josef Mathias Hauer. In 1958 he began recording new music together with Kurt Schwertsik and his wife Gertraud Cerha, who shared his path for more than seven decades to the city's big stages. It was the courage and charisma of programs like the scandalous concert with music by the young New York School in 1959 in the Mozart Hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus that, step by step, created the astonishing audience for contemporary music that Vienna is famous today. First, Friedrich Cerha gave his knowledge, his precision and his energy to the ensemble "die reihe", which was active for six decades, [...] As a composer, Friedrich Cerha understood it in many astonishing ways, a groundbreaking arc of meticulously researched tradition to radical reinvention. As a curator, he was involved in the founding edition of the Wien Modern festival in 1988, where he received what was probably the longest standing ovation in the festival's history at the complete performance of his Spiegel by the RSO Vienna on its 95th birthday in 2021 [...].
