This narrative history tells the story of the American War of Independence from the outcry over "unfair" taxation of the American colonies, through the Declaration of Independence on 4 July 1776, to the military campaigns and battles that swept along the eastern seaboard until the battle of Yorktown in 1781, when Lord Cornwallis surrendered to George Washington.;It gives an account of the war itself as well as the political manoeuvrings that accompanied it - in Britain and France as well as America. The author quotes extensively from contemporary eyewitness reports.
