The first English language edition. Yokomitsu Riichi (1898-1947) is a talented writer who wished to transform life info a fictional work of art. Although his prose has been much neglected, it is Japanese modernism of the 1920s, and the importance of his early literature, of which the bulk of this selection consists, is that is is perhaps the one serious attempt in Japanese to write modernist literary prose. Most published in English for the first time, the eleven stories presented here include 'The Child Who Was Laughed At', 'Spring Riding in a Carriage', 'Ideas of a Flower Garden', 'The Machine', 'The Carriage' the 'Smile'. This collection of Yokomitsu's stories is a must for anyone interested in Japanese literature. The dustjacket is shelf worn and a bit torn on the top edge. The top edge of the hard cover is foxed. Otherwise in good condition.
