Merchant's Category: Media> Books
These articles were written as a result of George Gissing's meeting in August or September 1880, with John Morley, then editor of the Pall Mall Gazette. Gissing, who was poor and unknown, had just made his start as a novelist by publishing his first novel, Workers in the Dawn, at his own expense in May of that year. While the articles on socialism are primarily factual, they are also a valuable indirect indication of the state of Gissing's political attitudes during a period of intellectual retrenchment. There is little doubt that at this time, and for a year or more afterward, Gissing considered himself a socialist. His sympathy with the poor, and hi hostility toward their oppressors seem to have assumed a more o less doctrinaire form by 1878, about a year after he returned from America to settle in London. The influence of his German friend Eduard Bertz, is very clear in the articles on socialism; and this suggests that Bertz may have played an important part in leading Gissing to become a socialist. Number 27 of 400 numbered copies. Minor shelf wear. Otherwise in good condition.
